The installer will be saved to the Applications folder. Keep in mind all data on the USB Flash Drive will be erased so don’t use one with data that you want to keep. Apple suggests at least 12GB of available storage so get a USB Flash Drive with at least 16GB of storage. This process has gotten a lot easier over the years. To perform a clean install of macOS Big Sur, you’ll need to create a macOS Big Sur USB installer. I still periodically format my computers and perform a clean install but when I can, I’ll do the upgrade first and then a clean install down the road. While I generally prefer clean installations over upgrades upgrades have gotten better where I don’t often see issues post-upgrade. But what if you want to perform a clean installation of macOS Big Sur instead of upgrading? There are plenty of reasons to perform a clean install.
